Executive Director Jennifer McGuire has a vision of the CBC that's basically a commercial network with some 'community outreach' elements, and that the best thing they can do is reach as many people as possible with the least dollars possible. It's sort of a 'free market decides' approach to a government service. Imagine what it would be like if our other educational and arts organizations had that approach: Our Art museums would be stocked with the most 'popular' exhibits and putting the tougher art in permanent storage or selling it off. Our schools would teach only trade skills. Our ballet companies would be presenting only year-round performances of 'The Nutcracker' so it is isn't so hard to see around Christmastime. Our theatre troupes would offer only 'light' situation comedies and musicals like 'Oklahoma' because they sell the most tickets that way. Sometimes the 'free market' or 'focus group says' method of promoting culture is not always the answer. It’s amazing what one person with no clue and a lot of power can do. It comes off as somebody's uncle wearing gangsta gear. Plus, Radio3 has the alternative/hip thing all sewn up, so why screw around with the two main stations? I don't even listen to the radio anymore, but a good third of my podcasts are CBC shows. I really hope they don't keep this nonsense up. I just don’t get why the CBC tries to be young, hip and edgy.
