Good god! We lived in Lubbock--I might know the guy! Once, while taking my parents on a tour of the Butchart Gardens (AWESOME) in Victoria, my husband heard someone calling his name. Turned out to be a former Texas Tech grad student (where my husband taught) who was visiting Victoria (from Seattle) with his new bride. So we were in a city 1000s of miles from home (Lubbock at the time) and ran into someone we knew (a person who didn't even live in Victoria, at that). One of the two strangest cases of "small world" I've encountered personally.

Ironically, my blog is about loving New England and how different the culture is from the rest of the States. I'll be sure to read Matt's blog, too. (Plus, I want to figure out if we know any of the same people.)

BTW, it's Alison, with one "L"--British (some might even say Canadian) style.

Please keep us up to date on the move!

Hi Allison -

Thanks for the kind words. As it turns out, I met a fellow online who is one of my first friends in Vancouver. Guess what? He's from Lubbock. So some people from West Texas do end up in Canada. Check out Matt's blog, Onomatopoeia. Some of his postings on observing the differences between US and Canadian culture are hysterical.

I hope enough good people decide to stay. Given how hard it is to emmigrate (and all of the elements that have to align: job, family, kids, friends, etc.)I can't imagine that there will be a flood of people moving northward, unless of course, they bring back the draft. Then I guess it will be like the 60s and 70s all over again.

I'll plan to keep voting in US elections as long as I can, and perhaps I'll look into registering in a swing state so it counts...The nearest is Washington State and that used to be true blue, but with the latest election there hanging on a few votes, I'm not so sure.

Hi, David: I just discovered your blog, and now you're leaving! I love Canada, too, and have visited everything from B.C to Newfoundland (missing the big provinces in the middle--sorry Saskatchewan!), and it's a great country. However, I'm not ready to give up on the U.S. yet. Although I'm a native Virginian (a state that's grown steadily more conservative over the last 20 years), I spent the 6 years prior to moving here in West Texas. Believe me, New England is like heaven in comparison (politically, anyway--the weather is another story). Given the current climate in this country, however, this might be the only place in the U.S. I could live right now. Things have been getting a little scary.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're leaving. We need MORE people like you in this country, not fewer! Good luck on your new life--I'll keep reading to see what's happening with you. Good luck!
